Roads so ill maintained and overlooked that they can actually get anyone  killed. Here are 10 such roads that can potentially take you to heaven faster than they can take you to your destination.

While this pass is only about 9 kms long, it will have you praying for your life throughout. Zoji La is nothing but a one-lane crumbling dirt trail that can get you to God faster than it can take you to Ladakh. Best described as a cliff-hanging drive where even a small accident can lead you into the bottomless Baspa river, probably to be never found again. The whole of Kinnaur road is built by cutting hills, and most patches of the road are dangerously shadowed with jagged edge overhangs. Rickety suspension bridges, sudden minor landslide and the very infamous Taranda ‘dhank’ (cliff) which is literally cut out of perpendicular hills makes the Kinnaur road one hell of a ride, a ride that can actually take you to heaven.

    5. Leh Manali Highway

Frequented by not only adventure enthusiasts but even seasonal vacationers too, the Leh-Manali highway is the most infamous highway in India. Loose gravel roads, extremely uncertain weather, uncontrolled 2-way traffic and steep 100 percent fatal falls makes the Leh-Manali highway a nightmare of a road. There are turns so steep that you would thank God every time you cross them successfully! What’s simply unbelievable is that, where only specially-made vehicles should be allowed to tread, this highway is taken by anything that comes fitted with a motor.

    4. Rohtang Pass

Indian Motorable Roads So Dangerous They Can Get You Killed
Rohtang Pass is so dangerous a road that the government is in the process of building an 8.8km tunnel as an alternative. While the place remains a no man’s land for over 3 months, the summers are equally nightmarish. Massive sludge, slimy gravel, sudden landslides on this route are known to cause jams lasting as long as 12 hours or more.  Moreover, the uncontrolled melting snow is known to cause 100 percent fatal accidents i.e. accidents where the survival rate is nil.

    3. Khardung La Pass

    Elevation: 17,582 ft

For the longest time Khardungla Pass was hailed as the highest motorable road in the world but the fact is it isn’t. At 39.7 km from Leh, Khardungla Pass is a painfully winding road, frequented by sudden minor landslides and avalanches. The frequency is so much so that the army has to keep a check on it almost 24/7. Continuous melting of ice which then turns in sludge makes the road even more dangerous. It leads to Nubra and Shyok Valley.

Hailed as the second highest and toughest motorable road in the world, Chang La’s climb is so steep it needs precision driving throughout. Again, the descent from Chang La towards Tangtse/Darbuk is so steep that it’s often considered to be the steepest mountain descent road in the world. It’s because of its steep incline and decline that Chang La was named so - "Pass in the South" (Chang = south, La = Pass).

    1. Mana Pass

    Elevation: 18,192 ft
Indian Motorable Roads So Dangerous They Can Get You Killed

The actual motorable road was constructed by BRO between the years 2005-2010, and is presently visible on Google Earth. Mana’s highest elevation can go up to 18,406 feet on the Indian side of the border. Mana is also the last village after which begins the old trade route to Tibet.
